The hike begins at the Egypt trail head off of the Hole in the Rock road. This is a strenuous 6.0 mile round trip hike to the Escalante River and back. From the trail head, the route drops 800 feet down steep slickrock then heads in a northeasterly direction across sand and slickrock. Rock cairns may be encountered along the route. Drop into Fence Canyon along an old stock trail that descends off of the south side of the point of land between the two canyons that come together to form the main canyon. Continue down canyon to the river. The elevation change from the trail head to the river is approximately 1,000 feet.
From Escalante, drive 5.0 miles east on Hwy 12, then16.3 miles south on the Hole in the Rock road, then 10 miles east on the Egypt road (240) to the trail head parking area.
